Attività > Port Development and Lagoon Preservation: A Sustainable Balance Is Already Possible
On September 21, 2023, the side event of the 2023 Sustainability Biennale – The MOSE Era, titled “Port Development and Lagoon Preservation: A Sustainable Balance Is Already Possible,” took place to present the findings of the study “Channeling the Green Deal for Venice,” a project by the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority.
The project addresses the limited nautical accessibility of the ports of Venice and Chioggia by developing scientific and operational solutions that respect the site's physical constraints, the lagoon's hydrodynamic balance, local water traffic, and the MOSE mobile barrier system. These unique requirements necessitated innovative, replicable studies integrating hydrodynamic simulation models and navigation modeling in an iterative process for the first time in Italy.
During the event, technical and scientific data demonstrated how targeted operational and infrastructure solutions can enhance port performance regarding operational efficiency and navigation safety. Simultaneously, these measures mitigate the impact of ship transits along the Malamocco-Marghera canal, achieving a reduction of over 50% in the annual volume of sediment eroded by vessel traffic.
