News > Edison Joins Venice Sustainability Foundation as Co-Founding Member

The collaboration between Edison and FVCMS is built upon a shared long-term mission: to create an integrated economic and social model of sustainable development for the city of Venice and its metropolitan area, with positive spillover effects across the entire Veneto Region. This model aims to provide further impetus to the local socio-economic fabric by attracting activities compatible with the territory, while simultaneously ensuring the protection and preservation of environmental and socio-cultural heritage, as well as the well-being of the local community.
By joining as a co-founding member, Edison will provide FVCMS with its expertise and know-how in energy and environmental transition, urban regeneration and smart cities, the hydrogen sector, and innovation.
Energy and Environmental Transition: Within the framework of lagoon system protection interventions, an analysis of operational procedures led to the identification of 34 best practices for managing environmental aspects related to biodiversity and ecosystems, active across worksites and facilities in Marghera (e.g., eliminating contamination risks by using biodegradable substances and post-project biodiversity restoration).
Venice City Campus: The opportunity to identify key professional profiles and provide expertise, including projects focused on mobility and building efficiency.
Hydrogen: A feasibility study on substituting a portion of natural gas with hydrogen as fuel for Edison's new power plant in Porto Marghera, which will be the most efficient facility in Europe.
Innovation: Edison participates in the Hydrogen Park consortium, which implements the European Hydrogen Strategy within the Veneto territory and can accelerate this process. It has also provided its expertise to La Biennale di Venezia and the city of Venice by executing an energy efficiency project at the Arsenale's Corderie.
Edison actively participates in the economic and social life of the Veneto Region, maintaining a presence throughout the territory across all major operations, from electricity generation to the supply of power, gas, and environmental and energy services to households, businesses, and local administration. The company is engaged in constructing the most efficient thermoelectric plant in Europe (Marghera Levante Power Station), achieving an energy efficiency yield of 63%, with a 40% reduction in specific CO2 emissions compared to the Italian thermoelectric fleet average and a reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) of over 70%.
Through Edison Next, the company also guides businesses, the tertiary sector, and public administrations in their decarbonization and ecological transition processes through innovative solutions for sustainable resource management. It was recently awarded the contract for the lighting and energy upgrading of the Municipality of Venice's infrastructure systems, managing its public lighting services alongside interventions for the implementation of smart city services.
Furthermore, Edison delivers solutions for sustainable electric mobility, as well as methane and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport.
