News > From the Moon to the Lagoon: The Space Economy in Venice Between Growth Prospects and the Porto Marghera Opportunity

The conference "From the Moon to the Lagoon: The Role and Success Stories of Aerospace Research in Venice" took place today, organized by Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice and the Green Propulsion Laboratory – Veritas.

Hosted at the Cesare De Michelis Auditorium at M9 in Mestre, the event evaluated potential developments in the sector alongside recent technological advancements in key industries such as aerospace. These innovations offer regional companies opportunities to execute strategic "supply chain leaps," positioning themselves as leaders in high-value, rapidly expanding markets. This evolution enables businesses to transition into high-technology operators and generate advanced employment opportunities for young technical professionals and university graduates.

The conference convened officials from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), business leaders from Venice and the broader Veneto region, coordinators of aerospace research centers from the University of Padua and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and representatives from corporate consulting and commercial banking. The collaborative framework among industry, academic research, and financial institutions aimed to assess current capabilities and raise awareness of emerging opportunities, fostering growth in a sector that stands to benefit further from synergies with planned hydrogen production and distribution projects at Porto Marghera.

The growth of the space economy also carries significant environmental benefits on Earth. Technologies designed to support astronaut life rely on closed-loop, zero-waste systems for resource management and food production in resource-constrained environments – innovations that offer direct applications for sustainable living.

Venice already features international benchmarks in this field, notably Veritas with its Green Propulsion Laboratory, a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to testing and industrializing advanced environmental and energy technologies.
