News > VSF and BCG on the Space Economy: Unlocking the Sector's Value in Veneto

Venice, May 21, 2025 – Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), co-authors of the report From the Lagoon to the Moon: Exploring the Future of the Space Industry in Veneto, hosted a panel discussion this afternoon bringing together institutional, industrial, and academic stakeholders to examine the strategic role of the space economy in driving economic and employment growth in the Veneto region.

Held at Terminal 103 of the Stazione Marittima as part of Space Meetings Veneto, the round table – titled "Space Economy Impact: Boosting Regional GDP and Jobs in Veneto – From Insights to Action – Based on the Report From the Lagoon to the Moon: Exploring the Future of the Space Industry in Veneto" – opened with presentations by Luca Farina (VSF Project Manager) and Alessio Bonucci (BCG Principal). They shared key findings from the joint VSF-BCG analysis, which estimates a direct contribution of €1.5 billion to regional GDP by 2040 and the creation of approximately 2,400 skilled jobs, including indirect employment.

The debate focused on translating this potential into concrete, sustainable outcomes, starting with measures to reinforce a competitive space cluster in Veneto.

Following opening remarks from Francesco Calzavara, Regional Councillor for Planning, Budget, and Local Authorities for Regione del Veneto, Marco De Luca, Chief Strategy Officer at Avio, explained how major industrial players can serve as system integrators, ensuring continuity and alignment across corporate, institutional, and academic sectors.

Expanding on this vision, Agostino Cortesi, Professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, highlighted the readiness of Veneto’s academic ecosystem to meet the demands of developing specialized scientific and technological expertise.

Giovanni Dal Lago, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Officina Stellare Spa, emphasized the high growth potential of the sector and its connection to developing skilled professionals capable of addressing industry challenges. Finally, Alessandro Sannini, Space Economy Expert and Co-Manager of the 3IP Space Fund, outlined key next steps, stressing the need for a robust, internationalized industrial policy to enable regional enterprises to scale.
