VSF at “Coastal Connection” presents MOSE as a best practice for safeguarding Venice

Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) took part in the second event of “Coastal Connections”, a joint international initiative between the World Monument Fund and English Heritage. It is a series of online workshops aimed at sharing best practices and concrete experiences to promote the sustainable management of coastal cultural sites. The workshop on February 20th, entitled “Sustainable Engineering Solutions”, explored a range of engineering and nature-based solutions for protecting coastal cultural heritage. It was attended by cultural site managers, citizens, governors and other stakeholders who care about this issue.

The Foundation’s speech focused on the mobile dams system MOSE: its history, operation, challenges for the future, and the opportunity Venice has today to invest in its development and in finding answers to urban sustainability challenges. Indeed, at present, the infrastructure is able to protect the territory from climate change. It is also the factor that allows to conceive the infrastructure needed to protect places when MOSE will no longer be functional for the purpose.

Therefore, today the city of Venice is ready to share its experience with other cities that are facing similar challenges, and the Foundation is active in promoting such exchange.
