The Future of Decentralization in a Changing World

  • Inizio evento: 2024-03-04
  • Fine evento: 2024-03-05
  • Luogo: Mikołajki, Poland

The 9th European Congress of Local Governments: “The Future of Decentralization in a Changing World”, organized by Foundation Institute for Eastern Studies, and of which Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) is an institutional partner, aims to serve as a platform for the exchange of views and a meeting place for leaders of local governments, representatives of regional elites, members of the state administration, NGOs and business.

On the 4th and 5th of March, in Mikołajki, Poland, a variety of topics were covered: from the problems of contemporary urban planning and mechanisms of city and regional development, to debates around investment financing, city management, environmental protection, and health policy. In particular, on the 5th of March from 10:10 to 11:10, the panel “Climate Crisis: Global Challenges, Local Solutions”, dedicated to the main challenges posed by climate change and innovative local approaches to address them, took place. The impacts of the climate crisis are intensifying day by day, and the panel explored the ways in which local governors can help build a sustainable future. Alessandro Costa, Director General of the VSF, made a speech entitled “Waterproof Venice: defending a World Cultural Heritage from sea level rise”. The presentation will revolve around the MOSE system, the set of complex works placed to defend the Venetian territory from high tides.

Circular Venice: policy, practice and innovation compared

  • Inizio evento: 2024-01-29
  • Orario di inizio evento: 09:00
  • Fine evento: 2024-01-29
  • Ora di fine evento: 13:30

The circular economy is a key approach to leading society toward sustainable land management through a more efficient use of resources, an aspect that is of central relevance to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda goals. Venice, as well as the rest of the Veneto region, intends to be innovative in this field, addressing technical and operational challenges arising from the peculiarities of its territory.

This meeting will focus on how the city of Venice, together with other municipalities and businesses in the metropolitan system, is addressing the challenges of circularity in production systems, also through the introduction of innovative approaches and solutions.

The discussion will delve into the actions initiated by the Veneto Region to make circularity more widespread and applicable in the regional territory, including via the interdisciplinary involvement of academic research.

Finally, policies, practices, and innovation in our territory will be compared with solutions implemented in other international contexts, in order to exchange knowledge about virtuous strategies that are implemented elsewhere and that can be an example for applications in the metropolitan and Veneto context

Resilient Cultural Heritage: protect cultural heritage from sea level rise

In light of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, it is crucial to address the challenges posed by rising sea levels and extreme meteorological events, which are expected to increase in frequency. Even with efforts to decarbonize our economies, the sea level is projected to rise for the next two centuries, putting at risk over 250 million people living in coastal areas less than 2 meters above sea level. Among the vulnerable sites are numerous cultural heritage locations situated in low-lying coastal regions, including 49 UNESCO World Heritage sites across the Mediterranean.

Moreover, recent data reveals that approximately 21% of the world's Heritage sites are susceptible to river floods. Venice, as one of the cities engaged in the UNDRR campaign "Making Cities Resilient," became a role model for Cultural Heritage protection and was acknowledged as such in 2011. The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, held in 2015, notably integrated the safeguarding of Cultural Heritage within its adopted Framework.

As we approach the eighth year since that conference, the upcoming event in Venice aims to assess the progress and effects of implemented strategies, particularly focusing on the outcomes achieved in Venice itself. Furthermore, the conference intends to renew urgent attention towards the protection of Cultural Heritage, strengthening of early warning systems, considering the most recent scientific data on the impacts of climate change. It is essential to confront these challenges and foster a collective effort to preserve and protect our shared cultural legacies in the face of a changing climate.

The conference is organised by VSF, in collaboration with CORILA, The European House - Ambrosetti, Consorzio Venezia Nuova and Vela, with the support of Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Procuratoria di San Marco, as part of the "Biennale della Sostenibilità - The MOSE Era", a series of initiatives promoted by VSF aimed at establishing Venice as a global reference point in climate change adaptation strategies.

2ND VENICE SUSTAINABLE FASHION FORUM

  • Inizio evento: 2023-10-26
  • Fine evento: 2023-10-27
  • Luogo: Fondazione G. Cini | Venezia

The second Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum stands as a beacon of innovation and reflection in the vast landscape of sustainable fashion. This forum is a not to be missed appointment as Side Event of the Sustainability Biennial 2023 - The MOSE Era for those who wish to critically analyze the present and future of sustainable fashion. Now in its second edition, the Forum has quickly established itself as the annual reference event for exploring the challenges of sustainability in the fashion world.

Fashion is a crucial sector in the transition to a sustainable future, and the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum aims to become the meeting place for institutions, nongovernmental organizations, brands, industry and business professionals, opinion leaders, and key players in sustainable change. The first edition demonstrated the importance of bringing these diverse stakeholders together to identify priority challenges, outline a shared vision of change, and initiate action based on verifiable scientific data.

One of the key challenges is measuring the global impact of the fashion industry, made complex by the lack of comparable data. However, the European Union has stipulated that fashion and luxury companies must make public their quantitative sustainability performance starting in 2023 or 2024 at the latest, highlighting the importance of sustainable transition. In particular, Italy, with more than 500,000 workers in the industry, is a focal point in this initiative.

This second edition of the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum is the essential event for those who embrace sustainable fashion and aspire to contribute to a better future for this crucial industry.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors – “World Built Environment Forum Europe Conference”

The "World Built Environment Forum - Europe Conference" will be held on 19 and 20 October 2023 at the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza S. Marco in Venice. The "side event" of the Biennale della Sostenibilità, organised by RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, www.rics.org), will take place in "The human safety net" auditorium. The two-day event will focus on the topic of "Decarbonising Europe's built environment: A sustainable approach for people, planet and profit".

From analysing the current economic outlook to discussing topics such as the impact of ESG factors on sustainable finance valuations and policies, WBEF Europe is designed to promote 'peer-brainstorming' by RICS delegates.

Venice Sustainability Foundation will organise the panel 'Climate resilient cities and infrastructure: Venice’s Vision for the future'. Moderated by Director General Alessandro Costa, the session will focus on supporting the transition to zero carbon emissions. With a focus on the MOSE System, which enables the city and its territory to be defended against the rise of the mid-sea, Venice will become a case-study at world level.
