"The paradigm of Venice: valuable lessons for sea level rise adaptation and disaster risk reduction" is the title of the side event organized by the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) at the Italian Pavilion at COP29 in Baku.

The event aims to highlight Venice’s adaptation experience as a global laboratory of sustainability and resilience, focused on addressing environmental and cultural heritage conservation issues, offering concrete insights and solutions that can be adopted internationally. The central question guiding the discussion will be: "What lessons from Venice’s adaptation model can be shared with other coastal cities to contribute to the implementation of global agendas?"

This initiative intends to present the best practices developed in Venice and stimulate constructive dialogue with the international community, strengthening Italy’s position as a hub for innovative climate adaptation solutions, particularly in the field of environmental and cultural heritage protection. The initiative aims to showcase the unique multi-stakeholder cooperation developed in Venice and outline the roadmap of activities that will ensure a resilient and sustainable future for the city.

This model brings together partners with different goals—from education and research to international cooperation and territorial governance—creating an ecosystem of integrated solutions. It is proposed as a concrete example to explore innovative adaptation and mitigation solutions, testing approaches, strategies, and practical measures, not only for Venice but also for other coastal-urban areas worldwide.

Venice Hydrogen Forum 2024

The Venice Hydrogen Forum is an international two-day meeting taking place on October 18–19 at the Hilton Molino Stucky in Venice. Organized by VSF and the Green Hydrogen Organization, the forum is designed to analyze strategies for transporting and trading hydrogen and its derivatives via pipelines and other means across the Mediterranean.

Aimed at ministers, CEOs, and senior executives, the forum offers a platform to discuss strategies for transporting and trading hydrogen and its derivatives. It also aims to bring together key energy companies already active in the Mediterranean gas market, governments from North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East, and renewable energy and green hydrogen developers, pipeline operators, European off-takers, and public and private financial institutions.

As the Mediterranean becomes an increasingly central hub for hydrogen development—serving as a vital crossroads connecting European infrastructure with major production centers in North Africa and the Middle East—there is a growing need to foster an enabling environment for future agreements and joint initiatives.

Waterproof Venice Webinar

Thanks to the MOSE system, a new chapter is taking shape in the history of the Venice Lagoon and the broader surrounding territory. Now that the future is waterproof, new possibilities for innovative and sustainable planning are unfolding.

Venice and its lagoon serve as a vast laboratory for innovative solutions to ecological transition and urban sustainability—capable of combining quality of life, economic growth, environmental stewardship, and creativity.

Waterproof Venice, presented as an original conceptual installation, aims to explore, interpret, and represent—with the assistance of AI—the projects proposed or envisioned by the members of the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) for Venice and its territory.

On September 6, a one-hour webinar (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM) explored in depth the projects featured in the exhibition "Waterproof Venice, A tale in images".

Speakers included:

  • Damiano De Marchi, Professor of E-Tourism at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and VSF Project Manager

  • Marco Marino, Research Fellow at Iuav University of Venice, Architect, and Exhibition Curator

The event was organized with the support of Campus Treviso – Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Veneto Green Procurement Forum – 8th Edition

The Forum Acquisti Verdi Veneto (Veneto Green Procurement Forum) is the landmark annual event for Green Public Procurement (GPP) policies, projects, goods, and services. Promoted by the Veneto Region, with VSF as an organizational partner, the event brings together key stakeholders in procuring sustainable goods and services and advancing the ecological transition of production and consumption patterns, fostering dialogue and connections among institutions, businesses, and organized civil society.

Now in its eighth edition, the forum aims to promote a widespread culture of green purchasing, serve as a platform for exchanging best practices, and connect the supply and demand for environmentally friendly goods and services.

This seminar initiative is organized in coordination with the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) under the Energy Transition and Environment (ETE) thematic area.

The day will open with an awards ceremony recognizing businesses and contracting authorities nominated for the 2024 “Compraverde Veneto” (Buy Green Veneto) Award. Following the ceremony, a dedicated panel of international institutions and companies will address GPP from their respective perspectives. The afternoon session will focus on training on GPP topics and green innovations, with a special focus on key initiatives outlined in the new Regional GPP Action Plan adopted by the Veneto Region in February 2024. Finally, the event will review proposals submitted by trade associations.

The event will also offer members of trade associations and professional orders (architects and engineers) an opportunity to earn continuing education credits.

 

From the Moon to the Lagoon: The Role and Success Stories of Aerospace Research in Venice

From research on photosynthetic microorganisms for extraplanetary colonization to the engineering of advanced space telescopes for deep-space exploration, Venice and the Veneto region are emerging as international leaders across a broad spectrum of high-tech sectors.

Regional universities and research centers offer local businesses unique opportunities to leverage aerospace breakthroughs to address emerging sustainability and economic competitiveness challenges. This sector – known as the Space Economy – demands a forward-looking vision to be fully embraced and integrated within the Venetian economic fabric.

The possibilities and implications of this new frontier are vast: from industrial emission decarbonization to the creation of novel materials and sustainable energy sources; from the design of environmental and health monitoring instruments to the production of innovative foodstuffs. Beyond concrete metrics, however, lies the crucial recognition that every innovation journey harbors unexpected discoveries – a concept known as serendipity – which often surpass the original objective in scope and value.

The conference “From the Moon to the Lagoon” aims to explore these themes by showcasing experimental findings, pioneering high-tech enterprises, development programs promoted by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Venetian business networks active in the Space Economy. Venice and Porto Marghera stand ready, once again, to navigate by the stars.

Co-organized with the Green Propulsion Laboratory – Veritas, this seminar forms part of the initiatives under VSF's “Innovation” thematic area. These activities are designed to foster innovation and business acceleration aligned with the carrying capacity of the Venetian metropolitan area, attracting high-caliber, cutting-edge talent and resources.
